Abs That Work

The ab routine I keep coming back to (because it actually shows up)

If you’ve ever done a million crunches and still felt like your waist didn’t change… same. The biggest switch for me was training my core like it’s more than “just abs.” I want the surface definition (hello, six-pack lines), but I also want that deep core strength that makes my waist feel tighter, my posture look better, and my workouts feel more stable.

This is my go-to abs workout routine that mixes: quick burn sets, weighted moves for definition, Pilates-style deep core, and a little cardio-core spice for that “tight” feeling. No gatekeeping. Save it, screenshot it, repeat it.

Before you start: what you need (and what you don’t)

Equipment options:

1) No equipment at all (mat/towel is enough).

2) Optional weight: a light plate or dumbbell (around 5 lb is plenty to start).

3) Optional: a pull-up bar if you like hanging leg raises (not required).

Time options:

If you’re busy: do the 5-minute finisher.

If you want the full burn: do the complete routine (about 15–25 minutes depending on rest).

Form cues that make abs “hit” instantly

I’m putting these first because they change everything:

1) Exhale like you mean it. On the hardest part of every rep, breathe out and pull your ribs down. This is how you get deep core activation instead of just neck tension.

2) Pelvis tucked, not arched. If your lower back is popping off the floor during leg lifts, your hip flexors are stealing the work. Small range is still a win.

3) Slow reps > more reps. Ten controlled reps will beat 30 messy ones for definition and waist control.

My UPDATED ab routine (full version)

This is structured like a circuit so it feels doable, not chaotic. Pick the level that matches your day.

Part A: Defined abs circuit (weighted or bodyweight)

Do this circuit 3 rounds. Rest 30–60 seconds between moves if needed.

1) Weighted Sit-Ups – 20 reps

If you have a light plate/dumbbell, hold it close to your chest. If not, do bodyweight. Focus on rolling up through your spine instead of yanking your neck. If full sit-ups bother your back, do a shorter crunch range and make it slow.

2) Weighted Squeezers – 20 reps

This one is a core killer. Think “squeeze in” with your abs as your legs come in and your upper body curls slightly. If you’re new, keep your head down and make it a controlled knee-tuck style movement.

3) Around the Worlds – 25 reps

Keep your core braced while you “circle” your legs. Small circles are totally valid. The goal is control, not speed. If your lower back arches, make the circle smaller and keep your ribs down.

4) Bicycle Crunch – 30 seconds

Not the flailing version. Slow it down. Twist from your ribs, not your elbows. I aim for clean, controlled reps that actually hit the obliques.

How often: 3–4 times per week if your recovery is good. If you’re super sore, scale to 2–3 times per week and keep your form crisp.

Part B: Deep core “smaller waist” block (Pilates-inspired)

This is the part people skip… and it’s the part that makes everything feel snatched. Traditional ab moves hit the surface. Deep core work trains the muscles that support your spine and help your waist look tighter from the inside out.

Do 2 rounds. Rest 20–40 seconds between moves.

1) Dead Bug – 10 reps each side

Press your lower back gently into the floor, move slow, and exhale as you extend. If your back arches, shorten the range.

2) Hollow Hold (or Hollow Rocks) – 20–30 seconds

Bend knees if needed. The goal is that “shaking but stable” feeling in the lower abs.

3) Elbow Plank – 30–60 seconds

Think: ribs down, glutes lightly squeezed, neck long. If 60 seconds feels impossible, do 3 x 20 seconds with short breaks.

4) Side Plank Crunch – 10–12 reps each side

This is my favorite for obliques without doing a million side bends. Keep your hips stacked and move with control.

Part C: Abs & belly quick burner (the “summer body” vibe)

This is the part that makes me feel tight fast. It’s simple, sweaty, and it hits that “core + cardio” combo.

Repeat 2 rounds.

1) Sit-Ups – 20 reps

2) Crunches – 10 reps

3) Mountain Climbers – 20 reps

4) Plank – 30 seconds

5) Leg Lifts – 15 seconds

If leg lifts feel rough on your back, swap to reverse crunches. Still lower abs, less strain.

The 5-minute “Get Abs” finisher (for busy days)

When I don’t have time, I do this after a workout or as a standalone. Set a timer and move with intention.

Minute 1: Crunches (steady pace)

Minute 2: Plank (elbows or hands)

Minute 3: High Knees (controlled, core tight)

Minute 4: Mountain Climbers

Minute 5: Bicycle Crunch (slow + twist)

If you want it spicier, repeat the whole 5 minutes twice. If you want it more beginner-friendly, reduce impact on high knees and slow the climbers.

“Abs in a week” challenge (realistic version)

I’ve seen the daily week challenges and they’re fun, but here’s how I like to run it so it’s intense without wrecking recovery.

For 7 days:

Do the 5-minute finisher daily, and do the full routine on Day 1, 3, 5 (or 1, 4, 6 if you need more rest).

You’ll usually notice your core feels tighter and more “turned on” fast. Visible definition depends on lighting, genetics, stress, sleep, and nutrition (more on that next).

Important: why diet matters (without being annoying about it)

I’m not here to be dramatic, but it’s true: you can’t out-train habits that don’t support your goals. If your goal is more definition, your routine works best when you’re also consistent with:

Protein (helps recovery and muscle tone)

Fiber + water (helps bloating and digestion)

Sleep (stress makes your midsection feel puffier, even when you’re training hard)

I keep it simple: balanced meals most of the time, and I don’t punish myself for living.

Beginner-friendly swaps (no shame, just smart)

If sit-ups feel too hard: swap to crunches or anchored sit-ups (feet under something stable).

If leg lifts hurt your back: swap to reverse crunches or bent-knee raises.

If planks hurt your wrists: do elbow plank or incline plank on a couch.

If bicycles hurt your neck: keep head down and focus on slow knee-to-elbow twists.

How I progress this routine (so it keeps working)

Abs adapt fast. If you do the same thing forever, you’ll feel less burn. Here’s how I level up:

Week 1–2: Nail form, shorter rests, clean reps.

Week 3–4: Add a light weight to sit-ups/squeezers, or add 5 reps per move.

Week 5+: Add a 4th round to Part A, or increase time (bicycle 45 seconds, plank 60 seconds).

And yes, I still keep deep core work in every phase because that’s the secret sauce for a smaller-waist look.

My personal “no gatekeeping” add-on (optional)

If I’m training at a gym and I want that extra superficial ab pop, I’ll add hanging leg raises (or captain’s chair knee raises) for 2–3 sets. Slow reps, no swinging. If you don’t have access to that, don’t stress—the routine above is plenty.

Little reminders that keep me consistent

You don’t need to feel destroyed for it to work. You need consistency.

Abs are a muscle group—train them, recover them, fuel them.

Posture is part of the “snatched” look. Deep core + planks + controlled breathing will change how your waist looks even before major definition shows.

Try it with me

If you want a routine that feels like it’s doing something immediately (burn + tightness) but also builds real core strength over time, run this for 3–4 weeks and track how you feel: stronger planks, better control in leg lifts, tighter twist in bicycles, and more stability in everything else you do.

Now go get that core burnnnn. 😇🏋️‍♀️✨
